A new catch phrase for Louisiana smoking drivers is going to be: "Quick kids, duck!" That's because a new law has passed making it illegal for a person to smoke in the car when driving with children who are restrained or in booster seats. I wonder if the sentence is less harsh for drivers if the kids aren't restrained. People may opt to let children roll aound freely in the backseats so they can smoke if the fine is smaller.
House Bill 1010 by Rep. Gary Smith, D-Norco, makes it unlawful for a driver or passenger to smoke in a vehicle if a child is in a booster seat or other child-restraint safety devices.
...But Highway Safety Commission Executive Director James Champagne said the state's child safety restraint laws require youths as old as 12 to be buckled up, so the smoking ban would extend to that age group, too.

Okay, then there's this one:
Meanwhile, Baldone's House Bill 985 prohibits motorcycle riders from toting a child younger than 5. Children who meet the age limit must wear safety helmets and be strapped in when on the cycle, the laws says.

In all seriousness, that one is kind of dumb. If a person of any age is strapped to a motorcycle, the only thing you're insuring is that the motorcycle will probably end on top of the person strapped in if there is an accident. Sure, they might not fly off but if the motorcycle is airborne, they will be too. Ouch.
